 In this in-depth painting studio class, students will enrich and broaden their painting experience.  Emphasis will include formal painting concerns such as composition, gesture, line, and color study.  Painting techniques such as broken brushstroke, optical color mixing, layering and glazing will help students in their color exploration.  Students will be encouraged to work in the paint medium of their choice.  Individual instruction is tailored to help students of all levels advance at their own pace.  Group critique, hands on demonstration, historical reference and visual aids enhance the classroom experience.  No class:  9/23 & 11/4.

Studio painting class in medium of your choice with emphasis on creative and expressive color.

In this studio painting class; students will bring richness; color and depth to their paintings.  Using a limited palette guided and inspired by color  theory;  students will implement techniques such as  layering, optical mixture, broken  brushstroke,  and glazing to create complex, expressive color. Basic ideas about  painting will be reviewed.  Students will learn about materials and techniques in the medium of  their choice, including gouache, acrylic, and oil.  Students will learn to construct paintings with  a variety of subject matter; using information about composition; color; gesture; and line.

Learn to draw the landscape and travel sketch book using Aquarelle colored pencils!

This workshop provides students with the opportunity to combine your love of travel with your passion for drawing. A focus will be placed on learning how to render the landscape through color, line, and gesture. Students will learn to become adept at capturing a place through loose and fresh drawings. Using water-based pens and colored pencils, you will create a travel sketchbook from both photographic references and on-site views around Door County. Water-soluble sketch pens will be available for purchase from Nina.

Introduction and exploration to several water-based painting mediums.

Explore the possibilities of water-based media! Non-toxic usage, easy clean-up and versatility are just some of the benefits of working with acrylic, gouache, and watercolor. Students will learn about the unique properties of each medium, how they differ from each other, set up and supports for each paint; and how each medium is best used. Color & swatch exercises along with small still-life paintings will teach students technical fundamentals. Nina will have some supplies available for experimentation. Be inspired by the beautiful lagoons at the Old School Forest Preserve….paint on-site with individual instruction!

Please join me at one of my favorite hidden landscapes!  The lagoons feature lily pads, rushes, and my favorite: pond scum! and is ringed by graceful trees. Our vantage point on a hill allows us a beautiful view of several connected inlets.

Travel Sketching

Capture quick sketches of the woods and prairie at this beautiful Forest Preserve!

You love to draw; and you love to travel.  How best to combine the two?  In this class, you will learn  how to maximize your times as you sketch and draw the landscapes of your travels.  Emphasis includes:  how to extract your vision form the landscape using elements of composition; how to render basic forms of the landscape; how line and gesture are used to capture the landscape; and how color can be used as an exciting addition to your drawing.  Using water-based pens and colored pencils; students will begin their own travel sketchbooks inspired by the beautiful grounds of Ryerson Woods; based at the charming Brushwood Center.  Water-soluble pens will be available for purchase from Nina.
